The film was pre-recorded. It is a performance centred on the Ypsilon motorway stub and, in turn, opens up a space for reflection on the turning points in Zurich’s and Switzerland’s transport histories. It was streamed onto the audience’s smartphones during the happening at Station 05. They watched it alone or in groups, without headphones, listening to the sound from their smartphones.

halloo Stummel
du Stummel, der du bist, hier
du flüsterst mir
abgeschnitten und verstummt
bin ich seit 60 Jahren hier
und verharre im ewigen Kippmoment
ja, berüchtigt bin ich
weil hier – hin und wieder, etwas ins Nichts kippt

( `à`)  so der Generalverkehrsplan aus den 1950ern
mit grössenwahnsinnigen Autobahnverbindungen
mitten durch das Herz von Zürich
mit einem Autobahnviadukt
quer über die Perronhalle des Züricher HB
und einem Verkehrsdreieck
bei der oberen Badeanstalt Letten
da, wo die A’s hätten verknüpft werden sollen
A3 vom Süden her mit A1 nach Norden
Geradeaus rein in die Stadt und raus aus der Stadt
Auto-Bahn-Fluss überdacht
die Sihl und die Limmat

nun, Stummel
du hast Unmut und Widerstand auf den Plan gerufen
jedoch haben Zeitgeister
die kantonalen Volksinitiativen
gegen das Expressstrassen-Ypsilon
abgelehnt, sozusagen (einfach) ins Leere gekippt
nichts, rein gar nichts
hat dem futuristisch-super-hyper-mobilen Dasein
etwas anhaben können

und der modern-mobil-menschlichen Spezies
vorgehabt
ungebremstes, flüssiges, autarkes Autobahnfahren
wie das Wasser in der Sihl
geht es in Fleisch und Blut über
und wird zur zweiten Natur

Ypsilon and Sihlhochstrasse — a less hot political issue today

Tsüri, the city magazine, writes: “The Greens (the green party) have launched a petition to make the space under the Sihlhochstrasse more attractive—that’s the highway bridge that runs from Brunau across the Sihl to Wiedikon.” The three initiators from the cantonal council don’t mince words, calling it an “eyesore” and even writing in their press release: “We’d love to blow up this concrete colossus.” Since that’s not possible, the space underneath should be revitalized, for example with walkways, platforms, and seating steps. And: “The bats should stay.”

From my point of view, having done some research for the film, I think the idea of revitalising this space under the bridge and the motorway stub makes perfect sense. At the same time, the Ypsilon serves as a memorial and a reminder of how Zurich’s and Switzerland’s transport policies have been hotly contested – through referendums and, ultimately, through the realisation on the part of governments that these megalomaniacal transport projects needed to be scrapped. Animals, too, have adapted to this concrete colossus and found their niche: birds peck at insects on the underside of the concrete bridge, and bats made their home here.
