«archiv performativ - ein Modell (a model)», at Ausstellungsraum Klingental from 14 August until 11 September 2011 iis a mediation and exhibition project of performance art and its artefacts in cooperation with the Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts ICS, Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Zurich University of the Arts) ZHdK
How can performance art be preserved and handed down? And what role do the documents and artefacts associated with the live moment play in this? The SNF / DORE research project «archiv performativ», which has been based at the Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts ZHdK since April 2010, is investigating these questions. The ephemeral nature of the live moment of performances means that art historians reconstruct this art form primarily through documents that are often referred to as «secondary sources». Materials collected in festival or institutional archives or documents prepared for the internet are often the first point of contact for approaching the «empty space» left by the past event. However, in order for these various archives to continue to exist as instances of transmission, they must be actively appropriated, kept in active use.
With «archiv performativ: ein Modell» (archive performative: a model), the project team, in collaboration with Julia Wolf and the artist duo Michael Meier / Christoph Franz, has developed an exhibition and mediation concept for the Klingental exhibition space in Basel. On the one hand, the exhibition is a publicly accessible presentation space for selected performance materials. The focus is on those performances that were shown in the Kaskadenkondensator between 1998 and 2008. The central aspect of this installation is to test and discuss different methodological approaches and theoretical approaches in a mutual exchange between the various academic and artistic fields and to present them in public events - in a sense, to also conduct research as a performative process.
