Lara Stanic — WAVES (2020)

Waves is a performative musical composition that playfully explores our digital communication. Data and numbers are sent through the air and space as frequencies or waves. At the same time, Waves raises the question of what constitutes an instrument in today's electronic or digital music. Mobile phones with a live electronics app and portable speakers serve as musical instruments in this context. The sounds are influenced by the built-in microphone of the mobile phone as well as the compass sensor.

In the first part of the performance, feedback frequencies are generated and modulated through a 360-degree rotation. In the second part, the frequencies of sine tones and the spectrum of white noise are electronically affected, controlled by the performers spinning around their own axis. The speaker is swung, resulting in additional acoustic and spatial changes to the sounds.
