is on several levels a suitcase word for this event: a hybrid of symposium, podium and properties from plants and marine life. In biology, sympodium describes a branching mode of vascular plants; the further growth of a plant is not continued by the main axis, but by subterminal lateral axes, whereby the main axis is mostly - but not always - consumed by the formation of a terminal flower. The sympodium is also a fast-growing species on the reefs of the Indo-Pacific Ocean. It is an animal that mainly does photosynthesis.
The title 'Sympodium' takes up the two botanical characteristics mentioned above. Our sympodium aims to reflect together with practitioners and theorists on the 'excesses' and symbioses of the term performance art.  Sympodium botanical

ist auf mehreren Ebenen ein Kofferwort für diese Veranstaltung: Ein Hybrid aus Symposium, Podium und Eigenschaften aus der Pflanzen und
Meereswelt. In der Biologie bezeichnet Sympodium einen Verzweigungsmodus von Gefässpflanzen; das weitere Wachstum einer Pflanze wird nicht von der Hauptachse, sondern von subterminalen Seitenachsen fortgesetzt, wobei die Hauptachse meist - aber nicht immer - durch die Bildung eines endständigen Blütenstand oder einer Blüte aufgebraucht wird. Das Sympodium ist auch eine schnell wachsende Spezie an den Riffen im indo-pazifischen Ozean. Es ist ein Tier, das hauptsächlich Photosynthese macht.
Der Titel ’Sympodium’ nimmet die beiden obenerwähnten botanischen Eigenheiten auf. Unser Sympodium will gemeinsam mit Praktiker:innen und Theoretiker:innen über die ‚Auswüchse’ und Symbiosen des Begriffs Performance Art nachdenken. Sympodium botanisch

the Idea for the SYMPODIUM What's Wrong with Performance Art | Die Idee für das SYMPODIUM What’s Wrong with Performance Art

was created around the launch of the website of the platform PANCH Performance Art Network Switzerland in Zurich, at Corner College in February 2016. The following day, a unique edition of LEGS, the performance relay, took place, whose concept goes back to an initiative of artists in Montreal, Canada. Dimitrina and Dorothea would have had liked to organized a platform for reflection on performance (and) art in conjunction with LEGS. The refrained from doing so in February 2016 because the program of the LEGS event would have had become too dense. They took a lot of time to carefully set up the «trans-local SYMPODIUM What's Wrong with Performance Art» the following year. There was also a strong desire to have many artists and organizers from french-speaking Switzerland in order to get to know the scenes in this part of Switzerland better. They worked together with the curator Denis Pernet from Lausanne, who is very familiar with the scenes there.

entstand rund um die Lancierung der Website der Plattform PANCH Performance Art Network Switzerland in Zürich, im Corner College, im Februar 2016. Am darauffolgenden Tag fand eine einmaligen Ausgabe von LEGS, der Performancestafette statt, deren Konzept auf eine Initiative von Künstler:innen in Montreal in Kanada zurückgeht. Dimitrina und Dorothea hätten gerne verbunden mit LEGS eine Reflexionsplattform zu Performance (und) Kunst veranstaltet, sahen aber damals davon ab, weil das Programm der LEGS-Veranstaltung zu dicht geworden wäre. Sie nahmen sich viel Zeit, die Veranstaltung SYMPODIUM What’s Wrong with Performance Art im folgenden Jahr sorgfältig aufzugleisen. Auch bestand der Wunsch unbedingt viele Künstler:innen-Organisator:innen aus der französischen Schweiz dabei zu haben, um die Szenen in diesem Teil der Schweiz besser kennenzulerenen. Sie arbeiteten mit dem Kurator Denis Pernet aus Lausanne zusammen, der sich in den Szenen dort bestens auskennt.

Corner College is located in Zurich's district 4 and is an independent project space for new and experimental formats of exhibition making with a focus on research and process-oriented contemporary art, quasi-academic knowledge production, and the promotion of discursive forms of contemporary art and theory in dialogue with urban processes, society, technologies, research, and transdisciplinarity. CC activates a space of micropractices and public participation echoing in a network of local and global exchange. Corner College has always been closely associated with a young and experimental art scene.

Das Corner College liegt im Zürcher Bezirk 4 und ist ein unabhängiger Projektraum für neue und experimentelle Formate des Ausstellungsmachens mit den Schwerpunkten forschungs- und prozessorientierte zeitgenössische Kunst, quasi-akademische Wissensproduktion und der Förderung diskursiver Formen der zeitgenössischen Kunst und Theorie im Dialog mit urbanen Prozessen, Gesellschaft, Technologien, Forschung, Transdisziplinarität. CC aktiviert einen Raum von Mikropraktiken und der Beteiligung der Öffentlichkeit, die in einem Netzwerk des lokalen und globalen Austauschs widerhallen. Das Corner College war schon immer eng mit einer jungen und experimentellen Kunstszene verbunden.
