Casa França-Brasil, Centro, Rio de Janeiro presents on September 30th from 11am to 7pm Supporter: Pró Helvetia, Basel, "Straw to Gold" Association, Argentina Culture and Espaço Escada, (free admission).
The performance-event DOCE EN DICIEMBRE – Brazil Edition, with a group formed by South American and Swiss female artists, centered on collaborative and feminist practices, performing art, such as music, video and dance, in addition to works with images and texts. Artistic actions also seek to rethink contemporary sociopolitical realities and everyday rituals.
The artists who will be in Rio de Janeiro are: Andrea Saemann (1962, Basel), Barbara Naegelin (1967, Basel), Chris Regn (1964, Basel), Cinthia Mendonça (1980, Minas, lives in Serra da Mantiqueira), Dorothea Rust (1955, Zurique,), Gisela Hochuli (1969, Berna), Jazmín Saidman (1987, Buenos Aires), Luján Funes (1944, Buenos Aires), Maja Lascano (1971, Buenos Aires), Nicole Boillat (1974, Basel) and Paola Junqueira (1963, Ribeirão Preto).
The group counts with the participation of two Brazilian artists: Paola Junqueira from São Paulo, born in Ribeirão Preto, who studied and taught in Geneva, and returned to Brazil after living more than 20 years in Europe, and Cinthia Mendonça from Minas Gerais, who lives in Serra da Mantiqueira where she runs Silo – Arte e Latitude Rural, a civil society organization founded in 2017, which engages young women in promoting dialogue between the countryside and the city, through art, science and technology. Paola Junqueira has been part of Doce en Diciembre since it began in 2018, and Cinthia Mendonça joins the group in this third edition.
The presentation at Casa França-Brasil will be held after a ten-day immersion by the artists in a residency at Villa Laurinda, in Santa Teresa, to exchange experiences and artistic practices. Added to their personal experiences and cultural origins, they intend to incorporate the Brazilian reality into their work, especially the atmosphere of Rio de Janeiro, where they want to let themselves be permeated by the city and the sea, Rio's culture, its colors and music, to create new participation and collaboration approaches. The objective is to cross borders, generate new connections and create a unique experience that also involves the audience at Casa França-Brasil.
In 2018, after two weeks of collective residency at URRA – Tigre, a non-profit organization in Argentina, where the artists reflected on gender, identity, art and territory, the group presented the result in an event at Fundação PROA, in Buenos Aires, with great repercussion among the public and critics. From then on, it became clear to the artists that they wanted to continue this collaborative exchange. An online open meeting followed, during confinement due to the Covid-19 pandemic, and, in October 2021, in Basel, Switzerland, at the institution Kasko, the artists held two performance events, which provided continuity and deepening of the artistic dialogue, understand the differences and keywords for controversial debates about art and activism.
